4,398 new Covid-19 cases confirmed in Virginia

In Wednesday morning’s update, Virginia health officials reported a total of 267,128 COVID-19 cases and 4,281 virus-related deaths, including 4,398 new confirmed and probable cases — which is the biggest daily increase in Virginia’s cases since the start of the pandemic — and 21 new confirmed and probable fatalities from around the Commonwealth.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed 232,940 cases and 3,894 deaths are related to the virus as of Wednesday, Dec. 9. However, 34,188 cases and 387 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

According to VDH’s Wednesday count, more than 40,000 cases have been reported from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

• Alleghany County: 430 cases, 24 hospitalizations, and 18 deaths
• Amherst County: 982 cases, 34 hospitalizations, and 7 deaths
• Appomattox County: 467 cases, 28 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths
• Bath County: 85 cases and 1 hospitalization
• Bedford County: 2,162 cases, 84 hospitalizations, and 23 deaths
• Bland County: 317 cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths
• Botetourt County: 922 cases, 34 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths
• Buena Vista: 358 cases, 11 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Campbell County: 1,379 cases, 42 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths
• Carroll County: 1,139 cases, 79 hospitalizations, and 31 deaths
• Charlotte County: 298 cases, 25 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths
• Covington: 215 cases, 7 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
• Craig County: 104 cases, 4 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Danville: 1,871 cases, 154 hospitalizations, and 53 deaths
• Floyd County: 400 cases, 17 hospitalizations, and 17 deaths
• Franklin County: 1,817 cases, 65 hospitalizations, and 17 deaths
• Galax: 636 cases, 48 hospitalizations, and 30 deaths
• Giles County: 377 cases, 13 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Grayson County: 603 cases, 45 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
• Halifax County: 898 cases, 22 hospitalizations, and 20 deaths
• Henry County: 2,088 cases, 192 hospitalizations, and 42 deaths
• Highland County: 27 cases
• Lexington: 411 cases, 10 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
• Lynchburg: 3,158 cases, 89 hospitalizations, and 38 deaths
• Martinsville: 785 cases, 80 hospitalizations, and 26 deaths
• Montgomery County: 4,260 cases, 76 hospitalizations, and 21 deaths
• Nelson County: 216 cases, 12 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
• Patrick County: 545 cases, 67 hospitalizations, and 28 deaths
• Pittsylvania County: 2,022 cases, 114 hospitalizations, and 27 deaths
• Pulaski County: 932 cases, 50 hospitalizations, and 17 deaths
• Radford: 1,278 cases, 26 hospitalizations, and 7 deaths
• Roanoke City: 4,471 cases, 134 hospitalizations, and 78 deaths
• Roanoke County: 3,480 cases, 74 hospitalizations, and 36 deaths
• Rockbridge County: 341 cases, 13 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
• Salem: 997 cases, 37 hospitalizations, and 25 deaths
• Wythe County: 882 cases, 49 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths

Since Tuesday, Dec. 8, VDH reported 181 new COVID-19 cases in Roanoke County, 92 in Roanoke City, 89 in Lynchburg, 59 in Danville, 53 in Bedford County, 53 in Montgomery County, 45 in Salem, 44 in Amherst County, 37 in Campbell County, 34 in Pittsylvania County, 29 in Pulaski County, 27 in Botetourt County, 20 in Franklin County, 19 in Carroll County, 17 in Wythe County, 15 in Henry County, 14 in Halifax County, 13 in Alleghany County, 13 in Appomattox County, 13 in Bland County, 12 in Radford, 11 in Patrick County, 10 in Giles County, nine in Grayson County, eight in Rockbridge County, seven in Covington, six in Bath County, six in Galax, six in Nelson County, four in Floyd County, four in Martinsville, three in Charlotte County, three in Craig County, three in Lexington, and one in Buena Vista.

In addition, of the 21 new virus-related deaths reported on Wednesday, health officials say one is from Campbell County, one is from Carroll County, and one is from Pittsylvania County.

The department says it has received 15,592 total records of confirmed and probable virus-related hospitalizations around Virginia as of Wednesday, which is 125 more hospitalizations than VDH reported on Tuesday.

Of these newly-reported hospitalizations from Wednesday, seven are from Henry County, two are from Franklin County, two are from Pittsylvania County, two are from Roanoke City, one is from Bedford County, one is from Bland County, one is from Carroll County, one is from Grayson County, one is from Lynchburg, one is from Nelson County, one is from Salem, and one is from Wythe County.
